What a business actually needs from CCTV

Most business owners do not want cameras for their own sake. They want to know what happened when stock goes missing, when a van is damaged in the yard or when a customer makes a complaint, and they want footage good enough to hand to the police or an insurer. That is a different brief from a home system, and it changes camera choice, placement and recording.

We design from the incidents you are worried about backwards: which doors, tills, loading bays and boundaries matter, what detail is needed at each, and how long footage has to be kept.

How we plan a commercial system

• Identification points: cameras at entrances and tills set to capture faces, not just movement.
• Overview cameras: wide views of shop floors, car parks and yards to show the sequence of events.
• Camera type: IP cameras on PoE, with 4K, colour night vision or ANPR where the job needs them.
• Recording: an NVR sized for the retention period you need, stored somewhere it cannot easily be taken.
• Network: cameras kept on their own segment so they do not slow the business network.
• Remote viewing: app access for the named people who need it, with separate logins.

GDPR and privacy on business premises

Businesses recording staff, customers or public space have data protection responsibilities. We fit signage, set privacy masking where cameras overlook neighbours or sensitive areas, and set retention so footage is not kept longer than needed. Existing systems and multi-site businesses

Plenty of the commercial sites we visit already have cameras, often an old analogue system or a recorder nobody can log into. We can take over existing Hikvision and Dahua systems, recover access, and replace only what is failing. Where the cabling is sound, HD-over-coax or a staged move to IP can save the cost of starting again.

For businesses with more than one site, recorders can be set up so authorised managers can see each location from one app.

Coverage and aftercare

Commercial installs run across about 60 miles from our Chatham base. Once the system is in, maintenance visits keep drives, lenses and firmware healthy, and our 24-hour call-out covers faults. The CCTV servicing page explains what a health check involves.

What the survey and installation look like

We survey on site, ideally with the person who will look after the system. Each camera position is agreed against a purpose, such as identifying people at the door or following vehicles across the yard, and we check lighting at night, because a view that works at noon can be useless after dark. Cable routes are planned to avoid disruption, and work can be arranged around opening hours so trading carries on.

After installation every camera is focused and checked on the recorder, recording and retention are confirmed, and app access is set up for the named people. We show staff how to find and export an incident, because footage that nobody can retrieve under pressure does not help. A written handover lists the cameras, the recorder and the logins so the system is never a mystery to whoever takes it over later.
