Gate Intercom Systems
Audio and video visitor communication at a gate, with practical choices for existing equipment, repairs and a new system survey.

Speak to visitors before opening the entrance
A gate intercom lets a visitor call the property from the entrance so someone inside can speak to them before admitting them. An audio system carries the conversation; a video system adds a camera view. Where suitable equipment is connected, an authorised user can operate an entry release from the receiving device. The intercom handles communication and an entry instruction: it is not the same thing as the equipment that moves an automated gate.
For a home, the decision may be whether to answer at an indoor monitor or through supported remote access. For a business, it can involve reception, deliveries and who answers outside normal opening hours. Start with those routines before selecting a panel. Wisetech's door entry systems service covers visitor communication for homes and shared buildings; gate arrangements can be discussed as part of the survey so the proposed equipment matches the entrance.
Gate intercom systems with a camera
A camera-equipped intercom should let the person answering see the caller clearly, not simply show the driveway. Consider the panel's mounting height, the position where visitors stand and the effect of vehicle headlights or strong backlighting. The camera view needs to work where someone actually presses the call button. A wider view can be useful, but it should not come at the expense of recognising the person at the entrance.
A video intercom is also different from a full CCTV system. Its camera supports the conversation, while CCTV is designed around continuous or scheduled recording and playback. If retaining evidence matters, establish the intercom's recording capabilities rather than assuming every call is stored. Our CCTV systems page explains dedicated cameras and recording, which can be considered alongside visitor entry without confusing the two functions.
Cables, power and answering devices
The distance from the gate to the building affects the design. Existing cable type and condition, available power, duct routes and network connections need checking before deciding what can be reused. Some systems use dedicated wiring; IP equipment depends on a suitable network connection; mobile-based equipment depends on coverage and the supported service. An outdoor panel should be selected and positioned for its exposure and the manufacturer's requirements.
Decide who should receive a call and how access will be managed when people are away. An indoor monitor gives a fixed answering point, while compatible app-based equipment may allow remote answering. Remote access depends on working connectivity and authorised accounts. For a shared entrance, agree who administers residents, staff and access permissions. Do not assume a phone answering feature automatically provides every access-control function the site needs.
Gate intercom repair: trace the whole call
A useful repair brief describes exactly where the process fails: the button does not ring, the indoor unit rings but audio is missing, the camera image disappears, or the conversation works but the entrance does not release. These symptoms point to different parts of the system. Note whether all receiving devices are affected, whether the fault follows wet weather or a power interruption, and whether anything changed on the network.
Safe owner checks are limited to normal controls and visible status indications. Keep the make, model and any installation records ready, but leave electrical connections and equipment inside housings to a competent engineer. A gate that moves unexpectedly or does not operate safely needs specialist attention; do not bypass protective devices to restore entry. Our door entry and intercom repairs page covers communication and release faults in more detail.
Bring the entrance details to a door entry survey
For an existing gate intercom, tell us who made it, how calls are answered and what has stopped working. For a proposed system, describe the entrance, approximate distance to the building, available power and whether it serves one household or several users. Photographs and existing paperwork help establish what needs reviewing. The intercom, release interface and any automation should have a clearly agreed scope before equipment is selected.
Wisetech is based in Chatham and serves Kent and South East London, generally within around an hour of the base, with direct engineer contact and a free, no-obligation survey and quote. Discuss a complete entrance system or an existing breakdown rather than choosing parts in isolation. The gate automation systems overview explains the separate moving-gate equipment, and access control covers managed credentials for authorised users.
