    Ubiquiti's UniFi range covers both wireless access points for whole-site wifi coverage and Protect cameras for CCTV, and the two systems share the same underlying network hardware, which means faults often overlap between them. A single failing network switch or a PoE fault, for instance, can take down an access point and a camera at the same time even though they seem like completely different pieces of equipment.

    Most UniFi installations run through a central controller, either a dedicated device or cloud-hosted software, which manages every access point and camera on the network. When a device shows as offline in the controller, the fault could be with that specific device, the network cable and switch port feeding it, or the controller's own connection to the wider network.

    Because UniFi equipment is usually mounted in fixed positions, sometimes outdoors or in ceiling voids, and powered over the network cable itself rather than a plug socket, tracing a fault safely often means starting at the controller software before considering anything physical.

    Check the controller dashboard for a specific error message

    The UniFi controller usually gives a reason alongside an offline device, such as an adoption failure or a lost connection, which narrows down the likely cause before any physical checks are needed.

    Confirm the network switch has power and its port lights are active

    Check that the network switch feeding your access points and cameras is powered on and that the port connected to the affected device shows an active light, without touching any internal wiring.

    Restart the controller software or device from its own interface

    Many temporary faults clear with a restart initiated through the controller software itself, rather than physically unplugging equipment, particularly for devices that are difficult to reach.

    Check whether other devices on the same switch are affected

    If several access points or cameras connected to the same switch have all dropped offline together, this points towards the switch or its power supply rather than individual devices.

    Note how long the device has been offline and any recent changes

    Recording whether the fault followed a power cut, an internet outage or a software update helps an engineer diagnose the cause more quickly if a site visit is needed.

    Verify the total PoE power budget on your network switch

    If you have recently added new cameras or access points, you may have exceeded the total power capacity of your network switch. Check the switch management page to ensure you are not hitting the power limit, which causes devices to drop off or reboot randomly.

    What Normally Causes It

    A PoE fault on the switch or cabling

    UniFi access points and many Protect cameras draw both power and data through the same network cable. A failing switch port, damaged cable, or PoE injector can cause a device to lose power intermittently or drop offline entirely.

    Loss of connection to the controller

    If the controller itself, whether a local device or a cloud-hosted service, loses its own internet or network connection, every device it manages can appear offline even though they are still physically powered and functioning.

    A failed adoption process for a new or reset device

    New access points and cameras need to be adopted into the controller before they will operate on the network, and this process can fail due to network configuration issues such as VLAN or firewall settings.

    Interference or overloaded wifi channels

    In busy areas with many neighbouring wifi networks, channel congestion can cause an access point to appear to be working while coverage and speed drop noticeably in parts of the building.

    A firmware update that has stalled or failed

    Devices occasionally get stuck mid-update, particularly if power or network connectivity is interrupted during the process, leaving them unresponsive until the update is completed or the device is reset properly.

    When to Stop and Call an Engineer

    Multiple access points or cameras on the same network have gone offline together
    A new device repeatedly fails to adopt despite basic network checks
    You suspect a PoE or switch fault but do not have access to swap or test the hardware safely
    Wifi coverage has degraded across the whole site rather than one small area
    Firmware updates need to be applied at controller level or network settings reconfigured

    Keeping it from coming back

    Keep your UniFi controller and network switches on a reliable power supply, ideally with surge protection, and schedule periodic checks of firmware and coverage so failing hardware is identified before it causes a full outage.
