Lockdown Alarms: Planning a System Assessment

Questions to establish before considering a dedicated lockdown warning system. Wisetech installation support must be confirmed before work is assumed.

Establish the requirement before selecting equipment

Lockdown alarms provide a way to communicate a site's agreed lockdown instruction. The equipment is only one part of that arrangement: people must know what the instruction means and what the site's procedure expects them to do. For a school or workplace, begin with the responsible person's assessment and existing plan, not a device list or an assumption that a burglar alarm is suitable for this purpose.

Dedicated lockdown installation has not been confirmed as a Wisetech service. This page lets you prepare a focused enquiry and understand what would need discussing before any supply, installation or maintenance is agreed. It does not claim past school installations, promise a particular system or present an enquiry as a booking for confirmed work. Call 01634 944161 to discuss the requirement; the engineer must first confirm whether the proposed work can be supported.

Who gives the instruction and who needs to receive it?

A school lockdown alarm requirement should identify who is authorised to activate the warning and which occupied parts of the site need to receive the instruction. Include separate buildings, outdoor activities and changes between the normal day and out-of-hours use in that discussion. These questions belong to the site's plan; they should not be replaced by generic assumptions about how every school operates.

Also establish who can end or change the instruction and how staff are told that the situation has changed. Equipment should be considered against that agreed procedure. If different buildings have different requirements, record those differences before a survey is proposed. Do not assume a single control point, phone notification or sounder arrangement will meet every site's needs without an assessment of how the instruction reaches the people affected.

Make the warning meaningful to its users

A useful planning brief describes how staff, pupils, visitors or contractors would recognise the instruction. Consider people who may not understand the same language, may not hear a sound clearly or may be away from their usual room. The appropriate communication method needs reviewing with the responsible people at the site. This page does not prescribe a warning pattern, product or legal compliance standard.

Staff awareness, induction and the site's own procedure matter alongside equipment. Record who will maintain those arrangements when users or room layouts change. Any proposed testing should be coordinated so it is not mistaken for a real instruction. A dedicated system should not be treated as a substitute for staff preparation or the site's safety planning, and nothing here directs pupils or staff to take actions outside their agreed procedure.

Existing security equipment is a separate assessment

If the property already has access control, CCTV or an intruder alarm, describe that equipment without assuming it can perform a lockdown function. Controlling a door and communicating an instruction are different tasks. Compatibility, authorised use and safe exit would need careful review before any connection or change was considered. Do not alter release controls, bypass locks or try to create a lockdown function by changing alarm settings.

Wisetech's confirmed access control, burglar alarm and CCTV services provide the separate routes for those systems. The school security page discusses existing school security requirements. Links to those services do not confirm dedicated lockdown equipment support. Keep their maintenance needs distinct in your enquiry so an ordinary security repair is not confused with designing a new warning arrangement.

Plan responsibility for testing and maintenance

Before committing to a system, ask who would look after it, report a fault, arrange agreed tests and update the user information. An existing installation may also have records or a support provider whose role needs establishing before a takeover is considered. Do not infer a testing interval, contract term or repair response from this page; those details would require a confirmed supported system and an agreed scope.

Wisetech is based in Chatham and its confirmed security work covers Medway, Kent and South East London, generally within around an hour of the base. Include the property location, responsible contact and whether the enquiry concerns planning or existing equipment. You speak to the engineer rather than a call centre. Use the form below without access codes or passwords, and wait for confirmation of lockdown support before making any installation or maintenance assumption.
