An honest way to judge repair against replacement without being sold to
Answer first: age alone is a poor reason to replace an alarm. Plenty of panels fitted many years ago are still solid, well built and perfectly capable. The decision turns on four things, whether parts and codes are still available, whether the detectors around it are also at the end of their life, whether the wiring is sound, and whether the system does what you now need it to do.
We say this as a company that installs alarms, so it would be easy to argue for replacement every time. In practice a repair often makes far more sense, particularly on a well cabled system where the panel is fine and one battery, one detector or one sounder is the actual problem.
What follows is the way we assess it on site, the honest triggers for replacement, and what a sensible upgrade path looks like when it is the right call. We work across Chatham, Medway, Kent and South East London and are happy to say a system has plenty of life left in it.
Where to Start on Your Own
Identify exactly what you have
Note the make and model from the panel or keypad, and take a photo. Support, parts availability and code options all follow from the model, not from a guess.
Count the faults, not the years
One recurring fault on a fifteen year old system usually means one component. Several unrelated faults across zones, sounder and power point more towards end of life.
Look at your detectors honestly
If every detector in the house is as old as the panel, replacing the panel alone leaves the parts most likely to fail untouched, which changes the sums considerably.
Check who holds the engineer code
A panel nobody can programme has a real practical limitation, even when the hardware is sound, so this genuinely affects the decision either way.
Write down what you now need
App access, part setting for an annexe, a garage zone, pet tolerance, monitoring. A system that cannot do what you need is worth changing even in good health.
Ask for both options in writing
Any reputable company should be willing to price a repair and a replacement side by side and explain why they lean one way. If only one option is offered, ask why.
Root Causes We Find Most Weeks
Parts availability
Some older panels and their proprietary keypads or expanders are no longer made, so a single failure becomes unfixable even though the rest of the system is healthy.
Lost engineer access
Where nobody holds the engineer code and the panel offers no supported route back in, programming changes and some resets become impossible without a change of panel.
Obsolete communication path
Systems built around a phone line that has since been withdrawn or changed cannot report as designed, and retrofitting a modern path is not always possible.
Whole estate ageing together
Panel, detectors, sounder and battery were usually installed on the same day, so they reach the end of their working lives at roughly the same time too.
Changed requirements
Extensions, home working, letting out a room or wanting phone notifications are all reasons a sound panel can still be the wrong panel for you now.
Wiring damage
Rodent damage, building work and DIY over the years can leave cable runs that are not economic to trace and repair compared with a fresh installation.

Keeping it from coming back
The cheapest way to delay replacement is servicing. A battery changed on schedule, a sounder reseated before water gets in, and detectors tested and swapped individually as they age will keep a good panel working for years longer than one left alone until it fails.
