What to Expect When a Burglar Alarm Engineer Visits
How a repair or service visit runs, and how to get the most from it
A burglar alarm engineer visit usually follows the same pattern: the engineer asks what the alarm has been doing, reads the panel's event log, tests the power supply and backup battery, checks each detector and door contact, and then fixes or replaces whatever is at fault before testing the whole system with you. Knowing this in advance helps you prepare and makes the visit quicker.
People usually call an alarm engineer for one of three reasons: the panel is beeping or showing a fault, the alarm has gone off without an obvious cause, or the system is due a routine service. The steps overlap, but a fault visit starts with the problem you have described, while a service works methodically through every part of the system.
Our engineers cover Kent and South East London from Chatham, and we offer 24-hour emergency call-outs for alarms that cannot wait. Below is what happens on a typical visit and what you can do beforehand.
What You Will Usually Notice
- Your alarm keypad is beeping or showing a fault message you cannot clear
- The alarm has sounded with nobody in the building
- A detector light no longer comes on when you walk past
- The system has not been serviced for a long time
- You have moved into a property with an alarm nobody has explained
What Normally Causes It
Reading the event log
Most modern panels store a record of alarms, faults and set or unset events. The log often points straight to a single detector, a tamper circuit or a power issue.
Testing power and batteries
The panel and external bell box each have backup batteries. Tired batteries are one of the most common causes of beeping and fault warnings, so they are checked on nearly every visit.
Walk testing detectors and contacts
Each movement detector and door or window contact is tested to confirm it reports correctly. Faulty or badly placed detectors are a frequent source of false alarms.
Checking tamper circuits and wiring
Tamper circuits protect the panel, bell box and detectors from interference. Loose covers, damaged cables or rodent damage can trigger tamper faults that need tracing.
Confirming the siren and communication
The engineer checks that the bell box sounds and strobes, and that any app alerts or monitoring signals still reach the right place.
Before You Book: Common Questions
What to Expect When a Burglar Alarm Engineer Visits: common questions
Need an alarm engineer to take a look?
Tell us what your alarm is doing and we will arrange a visit, including 24-hour emergency call-outs.
No call centres, a real engineer answers.
Safe Checks You Can Do Yourself
Write down what has been happening
Note when the fault started, what the keypad shows, any times the alarm went off and whether anything changed at the time, such as building work, a power cut or new pets. This is the first thing the engineer will ask.
Find your codes and paperwork
Have your user code ready and any paperwork from the original installer. If you know the engineer code, have that too; if not, the engineer will explain the options.
Clear access to the panel and detectors
The main panel is often in a cupboard, loft hatch or under the stairs. Make sure the engineer can reach it and each room with a detector, including garages and outbuildings on the system.
Let neighbours know about test sounds
The engineer will usually sound the bell or siren briefly during testing. A quick word with neighbours avoids concern.
Keep pets out of detector areas
Moving pets set off detectors during walk tests and slow things down, so keeping them in one room helps the engineer work through the system.
When to Stop and Call an Engineer
Keeping it from coming back
Before the engineer leaves, ask them to show you how to set and unset the system, how to change your user code and what each common warning means. Ask when the next service is due and keep a note of the panel model, so any future visit starts from where this one ended.
