    Separating a power fault from a cable fault from a recorder fault

    Answer first: when a single camera goes fully dead while the others are fine, the fault is nearly always local to that camera, its cable run or its port on the recorder. When several go at once, look at power and the recorder instead. That one distinction saves an enormous amount of pointless checking.

    A blank feed is different from an offline camera, and worth separating. Offline generally means the recorder can no longer talk to a camera that still has power. Blank or black usually means the recorder still has the channel but there is nothing arriving, which points at power, the cable, or the camera itself having failed.

    This guide covers the checks that are safe to make at the recorder and at ground level, and is honest about where it stops.     What You Will Usually Notice

    • One channel shows black while every other camera is normal
    • Channel has vanished from the layout altogether
    • Camera shows no visible infrared glow at night when others do
    • Several cameras went dead at the same moment
    • Feed comes back briefly when it rains or when it is cold, then goes
    • Recorder reports no video or a lost connection message on that channel

    What Normally Causes It

    Failed power supply or injector

    Camera power supplies and injectors fail, sometimes taking a whole group of cameras with them, which is why several dead channels usually mean one power fault.

    Water in an external joint

    Connectors joined at the camera end and left exposed take in water over time, giving intermittent then permanent loss of that single camera.

    Damaged cable run

    Rodents in lofts, garden work, roofing and building work all cut or crush cable, which typically kills exactly one camera and nothing else.

    Camera at end of life

    Cameras do fail outright, particularly older units on exposed elevations that have taken years of weather and temperature cycling.

    Port or channel fault at the recorder

    An individual port or channel on the recorder can fail while the rest of the unit runs perfectly, which mimics a dead camera very convincingly.

    Loose connection after work nearby

    Decorating, loft insulation, solar panels and roofing frequently disturb connections, so timing against recent work is genuinely diagnostic.

    Safe Checks You Can Do Yourself

    Count how many cameras are affected

    One camera points to that camera, its cable or its port. Several at once points to a shared power supply or the recorder, and those are two very different jobs.

    Check for infrared glow after dark

    Most cameras show a faint red glow from the infrared array in darkness. If yours shows nothing while the others do, that camera is very likely unpowered.

    Look at the recorder and its power supply

    Confirm the recorder itself is powered and check the indicator lights on any separate camera power supply or injector, without opening anything.

    Try the channel on a different port if it is easy and accessible

    On a recorder with plainly labelled, reachable connections, moving the lead to a spare port shows whether the port or the camera side is at fault.

    Note whether it is weather related

    A feed that returns in the cold or fails in the wet almost always means water in a joint or connector, and telling us that shortens the diagnosis considerably.

    Photograph the recorder screen and the rear connections

    The exact message on the channel, plus a photo of the back of the recorder, tells us the system type and the likely fault before we set off.

    When to Stop and Call an Engineer

    The camera or its cable is at height or otherwise not safely reachable
    Several cameras are dead at once and a power supply is involved
    You suspect water in a connector or a cut cable run
    The recorder reports faults on multiple channels or is behaving oddly itself
    The system was installed by somebody else and you have no documentation

    Keeping it from coming back

    Most single camera failures we attend trace back to a joint that was never properly weatherproofed or a cable run left unprotected. Getting external connections made up properly, and having the system checked over annually so that water ingress is caught before it kills a channel, prevents the majority of these call outs.
