Fault and fix guide
The best way to choose a CCTV installation company is to judge how they plan the job, not how cheap the headline figure looks. A good company visits or discusses the property properly, explains where each camera goes and why, puts the quote in writing, names the recorder and camera models, and tells you who looks after the system when something goes wrong.
Searches for CCTV companies near you return a mix of specialist installers, general electricians, handymen and online sellers who post kits. All of them can put a camera on a wall. The difference shows months later, when a camera drops offline, the app stops connecting or footage turns out to be too blurry to identify anyone.
We are a Kent based team working from Chatham across Kent and South East London, so we see plenty of systems fitted by others. The checklist below is what we would want a friend to ask any installer, including us, before agreeing to anything.
The Checks We Ask You to Run First
Ask how they will plan the camera positions
A reliable installer asks what you want to see: faces at the door, number plates on the drive, the side gate, the yard. If nobody asks, the cameras will be placed for convenience, not coverage.
Get the quote in writing with models listed
The quote should name the recorder, the cameras, the storage size and the cabling approach. A single line saying four camera system tells you nothing you can compare.
Ask how cables will be run
Clean installs route cable through lofts, voids and trunking. Ask whether cable will be hidden, clipped neatly or left on show, and how they handle brick, render and listed buildings.
Check what happens after the install
Ask who you call if a camera goes down, whether they can help with app access and passwords later, and whether they offer servicing. A company that disappears after fitting leaves you stuck.
Ask about recording and remote viewing
Find out how many days of footage the recorder will keep, whether it records continuously or on motion, and how phone viewing is set up and secured with your own password.
For businesses, ask about GDPR
A business installer should mention signage, camera angles that avoid neighbours' property where possible, and how footage is stored and accessed. If they never raise it, raise it yourself.

How to Choose a CCTV Installation Company: common questions
What Sits Behind the Fault
Why quotes vary so widely
Cheaper quotes often use fewer cameras, lower resolution, smaller storage or exposed cabling. None of that is visible on a one line quote, which is why listing the equipment matters.
Why the survey matters most
Camera height, angle and lighting decide whether footage is usable. A camera in the wrong place records clearly and still shows nothing useful. Planning is where installers genuinely differ.
Why the recorder choice matters
The recorder stores and serves the footage. A reputable brand such as Hikvision, correctly configured, gives dependable recording and app access; an unbranded unit can be hard to update or support.
Why aftercare separates companies
Every system eventually needs help: a hard drive fails, a router changes, an app update breaks access. Installers who also repair and service systems can fix their own work quickly.
Why local matters
A company based within reasonable travelling distance can return for faults and servicing without it becoming a special trip, which keeps small problems small.
When DIY Ends and We Take Over
Keeping it from coming back
Keep a copy of the written quote, the recorder login details in a safe place and the installer's contact number with your household or business paperwork. It saves hours if you ever need a repair, want to add a camera or have to hand footage to the police.
