If your CCTV camera is not recording but live view works, the recorder is not saving footage. Check three things in order: the recording schedule is enabled for that camera, the hard drive shows normal status with space available or overwrite switched on, and the date and time are correct so you are searching the right period. Most not recording faults are found in these settings.
One of the most frustrating CCTV faults is discovering that the system shows a perfectly clear live picture on the monitor or app, yet when you go looking for footage from an incident there is nothing there. This usually points to a recording setting, storage problem or schedule conflict rather than a camera failure, since the camera itself is clearly working.
Hikvision DVRs and NVRs record according to a schedule set in the menu, and it is easy for this schedule to be changed accidentally, reset after a power cut, or left disabled on certain channels during setup. The hard drive also has to be initialised and healthy for recording to take place at all.
Before assuming the worst, it is worth working through a short list of checks that any homeowner can safely carry out from the menu or the Hik-Connect app. Many recording faults are resolved this way without needing a visit, but some point to a genuine hardware fault that needs a qualified engineer.
What You Will Usually Notice
Safe Checks You Can Do Yourself
Check the recording schedule
Open the DVR or NVR menu and go to the recording schedule for each channel. Confirm the schedule is set to continuous or motion for the times you need, and that no channel has been left blank or disabled.
Check the storage status
In the storage or HDD menu, confirm the hard drive shows as normal and has free space. If it shows as uninitialised or as an error, note this down as it usually needs an engineer to resolve.
Confirm the date and time are correct
An incorrect date or time can make footage very hard to find even though it has recorded. Check the system clock in the menu and correct it if it has drifted, then search playback again.
Reboot the recorder properly
Use the menu shutdown option if available, wait a full thirty seconds, then power the recorder back on. This clears minor software glitches that can interrupt recording without causing any other symptoms.
Check motion detection sensitivity in the app
If using motion-based recording, open Hik-Connect and check the sensitivity and detection area settings for each camera. Very low sensitivity or a small detection zone can mean genuine events are missed.
Review recent power cuts
If the area has had a power cut recently, check whether the recorder restarted with default settings. A schedule reset after a power interruption is a common and easily corrected cause.
What Normally Causes It
Recording schedule disabled or altered
The schedule can be changed by accident during setup, after a firmware update, or when a power cut forces the recorder to restart, leaving one or more channels without an active recording window.
Hard drive not initialised
A replacement or new hard drive must be initialised in the recorder menu before it will accept footage. Until this step is done the system will show live pictures but save nothing.
Hard drive reaching the end of its life
Hard drives inside DVRs and NVRs run continuously and wear out over time. As they fail they can drop recordings intermittently before eventually stopping altogether or showing repeated errors.
Storage full with overwrite disabled
If the overwrite setting has been turned off, the recorder stops saving new footage once the drive is full rather than deleting the oldest recordings automatically to make space.
Motion detection zones set incorrectly
If a camera relies on motion recording and the detection area excludes the part of the scene where activity happens, or sensitivity is set too low, events will be missed entirely.
Corrupted recorder firmware or database
Occasionally the recorder's internal database that tracks footage becomes corrupted, which can make recordings appear to be missing even though the drive itself is healthy.
When to Stop and Call an Engineer
Keeping it from coming back
Check playback footage every few weeks rather than assuming it is working, and keep the recording schedule and overwrite settings reviewed after any power cut or firmware update.
