Security System Survey: What to Expect
How an installer plans alarms, cameras and door control before quoting
A security system survey is a visit or detailed discussion where the installer looks at the property, asks how it is used, and works out where alarm detectors, cameras or access control should go. You should come away understanding what is being recommended and why, followed by a written quote that lists the equipment and the work involved.
The survey is where a good installation is really decided. It is the moment to check cable routes, mounting positions, lighting, WiFi coverage and how you want to use the system day to day. Quotes given without any of that information tend to change once the work starts.
We survey homes and businesses across Kent and South East London for burglar alarms, CCTV, access control and WiFi. Here is what the process involves and how to get the most from it.
What You Will Usually Notice
- You have asked for a quote and been offered a survey first
- You want to know what questions to expect
- You are comparing installers and want to judge their approach
- You have specific worries you want addressed in the design
What Normally Causes It
Entry points and approaches
The installer looks at doors, windows, gates and drives to decide where detectors and cameras give the best protection.
Cable routes and mounting
Lofts, voids and wall types determine whether wired or wireless equipment suits the property and how neat the install will be.
Lighting and views
For CCTV, existing lights, dark areas and sun direction affect camera choice and position.
Network and WiFi
Remote viewing and app control rely on your network. Weak WiFi at the recorder or panel location may need addressing.
Safety and compliance
Escape routes, fire doors and data protection for CCTV are considered so the design is safe and appropriate.

Safe Checks You Can Do Yourself
Write down your concerns
Note what prompted the enquiry: a break in nearby, theft from a van, a dead alarm or poor WiFi. It keeps the survey focused on what matters.
Know how the property is used
Who is there and when, pets, deliveries, staff routines and times the building is empty all shape the design.
Allow access
The installer may need to see the loft, the meter or router area, outbuildings and the outside of the property to plan cable routes and positions.
Gather existing details
Old alarm or CCTV makes, any codes you have, and insurer requirements help the installer decide what can be reused.
Ask about aftercare
Use the survey to ask who looks after the system afterwards and how servicing works.
When to Stop and Call an Engineer
Keeping it from coming back
Treat the survey as a conversation, not a sales pitch. Ask why each item is recommended, and expect clear answers. A quote that follows a proper survey is easier to compare and less likely to change later.
