Videx Door Entry Fault Guide

Sorting panel, handset and wiring faults on Videx door entry systems

Videx door entry fault in Medway or Kent? We can help identify the cause.

We service Videx door entry systems across Chatham, Medway, Kent and South East London and can talk through the symptoms before booking an engineer. Call 01634 944161.

No call centres, a real engineer answers.

Videx door entry systems are fitted widely across blocks of flats, offices and communal entrances in Kent and Medway, and the equipment is generally robust, which means most faults trace back to wiring, weather exposure at the panel, or a handset that has simply reached the end of its life. Understanding whether the fault sits at the outside panel or inside an individual flat's handset helps enormously before anyone climbs a ladder or opens a junction box.

Videx systems range from simple two-wire audio setups to larger video and multi-tenant panels with keypad entry, and each type has slightly different failure patterns. A single flat losing audio while the rest of the block works fine points somewhere very different to an entire panel going silent for everyone.

Because the outdoor panel is exposed to rain, condensation and general wear from daily use, a good number of Videx faults are weather related and worsen gradually rather than appearing overnight. Catching the early signs saves a much larger repair later.

    What You Will Usually Notice

One resident's handset has no audio while others in the block work fine
The whole panel is silent and no calls connect to any flat
Calls connect but audio is crackly, faint or cuts in and out
The keypad backlight is on but pressing buttons does nothing
The panel occasionally works after being tapped or in dry weather only

Safe Checks You Can Do Yourself

    1

Check whether the fault affects one flat or the whole building

Ask a neighbour or check with the building manager whether other handsets are working normally. This single check tells you whether to focus on one handset and its wiring or the shared panel and main wiring run.

    2

Inspect the panel for visible water ingress

Look at the panel from a safe distance for signs of condensation behind the fascia, staining, or a loose surround that could be letting rain in. Do not remove the panel cover yourself, as this exposes low voltage wiring.

    3

Confirm the handset is properly seated and powered

Check that the indoor handset is plugged in correctly if it uses a separate power adaptor, and that no cable has come loose from the back of the unit.

    4

Test the keypad in different weather or after it dries out

If a fault only appears after rain and clears in dry weather, this points strongly towards water ingress at the panel, which is useful information to pass on when booking an engineer.

    5

Note exactly what happens when a button is pressed

A backlight staying on with no response, a call that connects with no sound, and total silence all suggest different faults, so recording the precise symptom helps with an accurate diagnosis.

    What Normally Causes It

Water ingress at the outdoor panel

Videx panels are designed to be weather resistant but seals degrade over time, and condensation or rain finding its way behind the fascia is one of the most common causes of intermittent or seasonal faults.

A loose or corroded wiring connection

Terminal connections behind the panel or at the handset can work loose from vibration or corrode in damp entrance recesses, interrupting audio or call signals without affecting power to the unit.

    A failed individual handset

Indoor handsets have a finite lifespan and can fail electronically after years of use, which explains why one flat loses service while the rest of a shared panel system continues working normally.

A fault on the shared distribution wiring or junction box

On larger blocks, audio and call signals are often distributed through junction boxes serving groups of flats, so a fault at one junction can knock out several handsets in one area of the building at once.

A degraded power supply feeding the panel

The panel's power supply unit can weaken with age, causing symptoms such as a dim keypad, faint audio or calls that connect but drop shortly afterwards.

A failing audio amplifier module within the panel

The speech amplifier module is the heart of the outdoor panel's communication. When this component begins to fail, it typically causes loud buzzing, persistent feedback, or a total loss of speech in both directions for every resident in the building.

When to Stop and Call an Engineer

Water is visibly pooling or staining behind the panel fascia
The entire panel has stopped working for every flat in the building
You need to open the panel or handset casing to inspect wiring
A fault keeps returning shortly after a previous repair
The building has video entry and the camera or monitor screen has also failed

    Keeping it from coming back

Ask your managing agent to arrange an annual check of the panel seals and wiring, particularly before winter, so weather related faults are caught before they cause a full loss of service.
