An alarm keypad that is not working or has gone blank is usually a power or communication problem rather than a broken keypad. Check whether other keypads work, whether the mains supply to the panel is on, and whether the panel shows any lights. A blank keypad on a system running on battery during a power cut often comes back once mains is restored.
When an alarm keypad goes completely dark or stops responding to button presses, it is understandably worrying, particularly if you rely on it to set or unset the system each day. In most cases the cause is related to power rather than a serious fault with the panel itself.
Keypads on Pyronix and Orisec systems typically draw power from the main control panel via a cable, so a blank screen often traces back to a power interruption somewhere between the panel and the keypad, rather than the keypad being permanently broken. A frozen or unresponsive display with backlight still on suggests a different type of fault.
Because the keypad is your main point of control, it is worth working through a few simple checks before assuming the worst, since something as straightforward as a tripped fuse or a loose connection can be behind it.
What You Will Usually Notice
Safe Checks You Can Do Yourself
Check the household fuse board or consumer unit
Confirm no fuse or breaker relating to the alarm system has tripped. If one has, reset it once following your normal household procedure and see if the keypad display returns.
Check for a power outage in your area
If your keypad relies on mains power backed up by a battery, a general power cut affecting the property can sometimes drain the backup faster than expected, leaving the keypad blank until power returns.
Try a second keypad if your system has one
Many households have more than one keypad. If a second keypad still works, this tells you the panel itself is fine and the fault is isolated to the single unresponsive unit.
Look for visible damage or loose fittings
Check that the keypad is firmly mounted on the wall and there is no visible cracking or looseness in its housing, without removing any covers or attempting to access internal wiring.
Note the time the fault started
Think back to whether anything happened around the same time, such as building work, a power cut, or another appliance being plugged in nearby, as this helps an engineer diagnose the cause faster.
What Normally Causes It
A tripped fuse or breaker
If the circuit supplying the alarm system has tripped, the keypad will lose power entirely and go blank, even though the rest of the property's electrics may be working normally.
A loose or damaged cable to the keypad
The cable connecting a keypad to the main panel can work loose over time or be disturbed during other work in the property, cutting off power or data to the display.
A fault within the panel itself
If every keypad on the system is affected rather than just one, the underlying fault is more likely to be with the main control panel rather than an individual keypad unit.
Water ingress or condensation
A keypad fitted somewhere prone to damp, such as near an entrance exposed to weather, can suffer internal moisture damage over time, leading to intermittent or total failure of the display.
General wear on an ageing keypad
Like any electronic component, keypads have a working lifespan, and older units can simply reach the end of their reliable service life, showing display or button faults as they degrade.

Avoid siting keypads where they are exposed to damp or direct weather, and mention any flickering or intermittent display issues at the earliest opportunity so a developing fault can be addressed before the keypad fails completely.
