No call centres, a real engineer answers.

Hikvision DVRs and NVRs display a range of on-screen error messages covering everything from a disconnected camera to a failing hard drive, and each points to a different part of the system. Reading these messages correctly is the quickest way to know whether you are looking at a simple cabling issue or something more serious.

Hard drive health warnings deserve particular attention, since a drive nearing failure can appear to work normally for weeks before recordings start to drop out or disappear altogether. Network-related errors, by contrast, usually affect remote viewing on the app rather than local recording, and often trace back to the router or broadband connection rather than the recorder itself.

This guide groups the most common Hikvision error messages by type so you can work out roughly what you are dealing with, along with the checks that are safe to try before deciding whether an engineer needs to look at the recorder or drive directly.

    What You Will Usually Notice

A camera channel shown as video loss or signal lost on screen
An S.M.A.R.T. or HDD error message in the storage menu
The Hik-Connect app showing the device as offline while local viewing works
IP address conflict or network error messages on screen
Recording gaps that line up with a reported storage warning

Safe Checks You Can Do Yourself

    1

Note the exact error text or code shown

Hikvision error messages are usually specific about the channel or component affected, so write down the exact wording before doing anything else, as this narrows down the cause considerably.

    2

Check cabling for a video loss error

For a video loss or signal lost message on a specific channel, check the cable and connector at both the camera and recorder end are secure and undamaged before assuming the camera itself has failed.

    3

Check the HDD status in the storage menu

Open the storage or HDD health menu to see whether the drive is reported as healthy, degraded or in error. A degraded status is an early warning worth acting on before it worsens.

    4

Restart the router for network-only errors

If the recorder works fine locally but shows offline in the app, restart your router and check the recorder's network settings menu for a valid IP address before assuming a fault on the recorder itself.

    5

Check for an IP address conflict

If the network menu shows an IP conflict error, another device on your network may be using the same address. This is usually resolved by setting the recorder to obtain its address automatically or assigning a unique static one.

    6

Test the camera with a known working cable at the recorder

If a specific camera shows video loss, try connecting it to the recorder using a short known working patch lead. This confirms whether the issue is with the long cable run or the camera hardware itself.

    What Normally Causes It

    Damaged or disconnected camera cable

A knocked, corroded or water-damaged cable connection is one of the most common causes of a video loss error, particularly on cameras mounted outside and exposed to weather over time.

Hard drive nearing the end of its working life

Drives inside recorders run continuously and generate a S.M.A.R.T. warning as internal indicators such as bad sectors increase, which is the recorder's way of flagging failure before it happens.

    Router or broadband connection issues

An offline status in the app while local viewing works normally almost always points to the home network or broadband connection rather than a fault with the recorder or cameras themselves.

Duplicate IP address on the network

If another device is assigned the same IP address as the recorder, both can intermittently drop off the network, which shows as a conflict error on the recorder's screen.

Recorder overheating or power supply issues

A recorder running hot due to poor ventilation, or an unstable power supply, can cause intermittent errors across several channels at once that are not related to any individual camera.

When to Stop and Call an Engineer

A hard drive shows a degraded or error status in the storage menu
A video loss error persists after checking the cable connections
Multiple channels show errors simultaneously, suggesting a recorder-level fault
You hear unusual noise from the recorder alongside a storage error
Network errors persists after restarting the router and checking settings

    Keeping it from coming back

Check the storage health menu every few months rather than waiting for a warning, and inspect outdoor camera cable runs periodically for weather damage before they cause a fault.
