Visonic PowerMax and PowerMaster systems are wireless alarm ranges widely used in homes across Kent and South East London, and both rely on a mix of a mains-powered panel with backup battery and individually battery-powered door contacts, PIRs and smoke sensors. When any one of these batteries starts to run low, the system is designed to warn you well before it actually fails.
The low battery warning usually shows as a specific trouble icon on the panel or keypad, sometimes alongside an intermittent beep, and many PowerMax installations also send a notification through the linked app if one is set up. The tricky part is working out which device is actually affected, since the panel, a wireless sensor and the bell box all have separate batteries that fail independently of each other.
The good news is that most sensor battery swaps on the PowerMax and PowerMaster ranges are genuinely homeowner-friendly, provided you use the correct battery type and the sensor is easy to access. Where it gets more involved is the internal panel battery or persistent beeping that does not clear after a swap, which is where getting an engineer to look at it makes more sense.

Check the keypad menu to identify the affected zone
PowerMax panels usually let you scroll through a fault or status menu that names the specific zone or sensor with the low battery, which saves time compared to guessing which device to open.
Replace accessible sensor batteries with the correct type
Most PowerMax door contacts and PIRs use standard, widely available batteries. Match the exact type and size shown on the old battery, and avoid touching the sensor's internal wiring while doing so.
Refit the sensor cover securely after changing the battery
A loose cover can trigger a tamper warning that looks similar to a low battery fault. Make sure the sensor casing clicks firmly back into place before leaving the area.
Allow time for the fault to clear from the panel
After a battery swap, it can take a short while, sometimes until the next scheduled check-in from that sensor, for the low battery warning to disappear from the keypad display.
Note down which sensors have had batteries changed and when
Keeping a simple record helps you spot patterns, such as one sensor needing batteries far more often than others, which can be a useful clue if problems continue.
Verify the orientation of the new battery in the sensor
It is easy to accidentally insert a coin cell or lithium battery backwards when working at height or in a dark corner. Double check the polarity markings inside the sensor casing before snapping it shut.

Natural battery depletion over time
Wireless sensor batteries on PowerMax and PowerMaster devices typically last a good few years, but eventually run down through normal use and need replacing like any battery-powered device.
A sensor reporting in more frequently than normal
Sensors placed in busy areas or exposed to frequent temperature changes can check in with the panel more often, draining their battery faster than one in a quiet, stable location.
Panel backup battery reaching end of life
The main panel's internal backup battery, separate from any sensor batteries, degrades over several years and eventually needs replacing to maintain protection during power cuts.
Poor wireless signal causing repeated retransmission
If a sensor is too far from the panel or blocked by thick walls, it may repeatedly retry sending its signal, which uses more battery power than a strong, stable connection would.
Incorrect battery type used in a previous replacement
Using a battery that is not the specified type or capacity for that sensor can cause it to drain unusually quickly or report inaccurate battery status to the panel.
When to Stop and Call an Engineer
Keeping it from coming back
Replace wireless sensor batteries proactively every few years rather than waiting for a warning, and have the panel's backup battery checked during a routine service visit.
